Sticol is a safe and effective non-surgical technique that involves injecting a substance composed of Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) into the skin. It works by penetrating the deep layers of the skin, stimulating collagen-producing cells, and then gradually breaking down and being absorbed by the body without causing any harm.
The use of PLLA began in 1999 and was first approved by the FDA in 2004 to treat facial fat loss (lipoatrophy) in individuals with HIV. Lipoatrophy leads to the loss of facial fat, resulting in a hollow cheek appearance and deep wrinkles. In 2009, the FDA approved PLLA for cosmetic use to treat facial wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin for a more youthful look.
The skin begins to produce less collagen starting in the late twenties. By the age of 40, many people lose up to 20% of their natural collagen. To address this, cosmetic doctors have recently adopted various alternatives like fillers, Botox, and other techniques, in addition to PLLA. PLLA injections can be considered as a natural collagen stimulator, helping to gradually rebuild collagen, restore facial volume, reduce wrinkles, and rejuvenate the skin.
It is a synthetic, biocompatible material made of lactic acid, a natural substance found in the human body. Therefore, there is no need for prior allergy testing before treatment. However, to minimize the risk of bleeding, it is recommended to stop taking anti-inflammatory medications and painkillers like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen several days before the treatment. Acetaminophen is allowed as it is safe, but caffeinated beverages should be avoided since the medication contains caffeine, which may cause an increase in blood pressure.
Procedure:
The injection areas are first identified, then thoroughly cleaned and sterilized. A topical anesthetic is applied to ensure patient comfort and eliminate any pain during the procedure. Finally, the substance is injected into the targeted areas.
Contraindications for Volume Sticol Injections:
It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. It is also not advised for individuals with heart diseases, those under the age of 18, or individuals with immune disorders.
Non-surgical cosmetic treatments have come a long way in recent years, becoming an extremely effective means of achieving aesthetic goals, including improving the appearance of the buttocks. In the past, surgery was the only solution, involving several procedures to transfer fat from a donor area of the body to the buttocks to increase their volume. However, nowadays, there is an alternative to achieve the desired look without resorting to surgical procedures.
Many patients are pleased with Sticol Volume injections because it is a low-risk, non-surgical method to achieve rounder and more proportionate buttocks. The injections fill the area below the buttocks in a curved, natural-looking manner that suits the body type by stimulating collagen production. It can also help reduce cellulite in the buttocks and thigh area. The procedure typically takes between 30 to 60 minutes.
Initially, the doctor identifies the injection areas while the patient is standing. A local anesthetic, such as lidocaine, is then applied, and the injections are administered using a microcannula to deliver the substance into the targeted areas of the buttocks.
During the injection process, part of the treatment is administered while the patient is standing, and the remaining amount is injected while the patient lies on their stomach. Once the injections are completed, the doctor massages the area for a few minutes. After the procedure, the patient can immediately return to their normal life, including driving and sitting normally.
The primary reason for potential risks is the failure to choose a competent and experienced doctor. Injecting in the wrong area may lead to the formation of lumps under the skin, which occurs in about 7-9% of cases. The patient may have to endure these lumps or complications for the entire duration that the PLLA (Poly-L-lactic acid) material remains in the body until it dissolves and is absorbed, as there are no reflective agents to break it down and eliminate it. Some lumps may be treated with corticosteroid injections or surgery.
There is no restriction on using Sticol Volume alongside other types of fillers on the same day, provided they are applied to different areas of the face. For example, Sticol Volume can be used in the cheek area, while a filler can be applied to the lower part of the face.
However, it is generally not recommended to perform Sticol Volume injections and filler injections in the same area during the same session. If both types are to be used in one area, such as the cheeks, they should be spaced apart by at least 2-4 weeks.
It is also strongly advised not to inject PLLA over any of the following materials under any circumstances: Artefill, Bellafill, or Silicone, as this could cause permanent deformities, scarring, and large red bumps that cannot be removed.
If the area has previously been injected with Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite), it is recommended to wait 2-4 weeks before injecting PLLA in the same area.
In general, it is safe to use different types of injectables on the same day and in the same area if they belong to the same category. For example, hyaluronic acid injections can be administered deep into the cheek, while PLLA injections can be applied in the same area but at a shallower depth.
